The Canoe and Kayak Club has something to offer everyone and is one of the most active clubs in St Andrews. The club caters for all levels of experience and skill level and welcomes both complete beginners and experienced paddlers.
Senior members are on hand to help those new to the sport to get started, teaching the the basics to build confidence, before harder skills are tried. The club offers many different types of canoeing and kayaking activities, including Surf and White Water to Kayak Polo and Slalom.
The Canoe Club provides a very social and welcoming environment for students to meet new friends, take part in a many different activities and travel around the country. The club has several traditions – both on and off of the water – and organises frequent events between paddling, such as casual pub nights, monthly themed Sinners run by the Athletic Union, Burns Night, Christmas Dinner and festive holiday gatherings. The club also hosts two Balls each year – one in the fall and one in the spring – with a dinner, a Ceilidh, a DJ and hours of fun.
During academic year 2019-20 the club raised £271, through Christmas calendar sales and other fundraising events, for Leap Sports Scotland, which aims to ensure greater inclusion for LGBTI people in sport, and for Storehouse, a foodbank for vulnerable people in NE Fife.
The club will vote for another two charities to support this coming year, with planned fundraising events including craft evenings, bake-offs, pot-lucks, and a sponsored hike.
The Canoe Club are extremely active in the local community and every year send volunteers to the local Cambo Estate, organising beach cleans and litter picks. The club also collect donations at social events for the food bank charity St Candrews.
